WTH is Satire?

Satire? What is satire? Satire is a word that ridicules and shaming individuals, corporations, government, or society itself into improvement by using some graphics, images, and performing arts. Those graphics or images are usually used to criticise the society in a humorous way. Use some humour element to grab audience’s attention about the wider issue in the society.

There are many satire cases occur in Malaysia. Here are some cases occurred in Malaysia.

One of the satire cases is about a Malaysian cartoonist named Zunar who was criticising the court’s ruling that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was guilty of sodomy on his Twitter. He was arrested and facing charges under Malaysia’s Sedition Act and a possible 43 years in jail for speaking out against his government.

Besides, there is another satire cases occurred in Malaysia. Fahmi Reza, one of the Malaysian cartoonist and he also is a political graphic designer, street artist and documentary filmmaker in Malaysia. He was charged with ‘violating multimedia laws’ as a result of his clown caricature. The image is about our prime minister, Najib Razak with a red nose and red mouth, mascara-lined eyes, and arched eyebrows over a powdered white face which is a clown.

Does satire need in Malaysia? The answer is YES. Satire must and much needed in Malaysia because sometimes satire can trigger the audiences to think and care about the surrounding, no matter is our society or government. Malaysia as a democratic country, do we really democracy or just autocracy country? Does our “democracy” are just an illusion? Malaysia always talks about freedom of speech, but do we really free to speak? Therefore, satire is needed in Malaysia because it is a way for us to speak and point out our words, needs and ideas. Although satire is needed in Malaysia, we cannot overuse it. We only can use this to aware the society and think about the situation of the surrounding but not simply criticise some people and cases that do not affect our society or trying to welter our society.
